Full brazilian, natural but trimmed, or a thin strip, they can all cause irritated skin, red bumps, or ingrown hairs. How do you prevent them and ace your bikini wax like a pro?

When the first sun rays start showing their face, when we have a date, or a wild night out, most of us reach for the razor. That’s nice, but a couple of days later we’re stuck with itchy crotches. Giving your nether regions a good shave is a skill all of its own. No stress! We’ve got your back with these amazing tips.

Save the shave for last

Save shaving till after you’ve taken a shower. Pubic hair can be very stiff and rigid. The warm water and steam of the shower will make the hair more supple and open the pores of the skin. This allows your razor to glide across the skin more easily.

But first, a trim!

If you’ve neglected the lawn for a while, it’s wise to trim first. Long hairs can get caught in your razor or accumulate between the blades. This can cause shaving irritation and wounds.

Scrub

It’s a good idea to exfoliate both before and after shaving. When you scrub before shaving, you exfoliate the skin making the shaving process easier. Exfoliating after shaving removes dead skin cells. This makes the hair shafts less likely to clog and reduces the chance of ingrowns. The new hairs are able to grow without any blockage. It’s advisable to use a mild scrub, such as sugar, for your pubic area and make sure to not scrub hard, but to rub gently with a warm washcloth.

Less is more

Leave the seven-blade razors in the cabinet, because less is more when it comes to the amount of blades in your razor. This is because the blades shave in sequence, cutting the hair shorter and shorter. The shorter the hair, the greater the chance of ingrown hairs. If possible go for a razor with 3 or fewer blades. If you often suffer from ingrown hairs, try a razor with 1 blade.

Go with the flow

Always shave with the grain. If you shave against the grain, you’ll get a smoother result initially, but the chance of ingrown hairs and razor burns increases. So grab your shaving cream, gel or oil and go with the flow.

‘Pull the skin tight, and try to not go over one particular area more than once’

To create the smoothest possible shave, make sure to tighten the skin a little before you drag your razor across the area. Try to shave one area as little as possible to prevent any skin irritations. Oh and don’t forget to always rinse the blades between shaves!

The skin of the labia is soft and often a bit loose. So be extra careful with your blades down there. Lift up your leg and support your other foot on a DRY surface, a wet, naked date at the ER is not the ideal way to spend your time. Lifting up your leg will automatically tighten the skin and will make the shaving process easier as a result.

Another tip! Use a mirror if you want to shave between your legs. The chances of any accidents are a lot smaller. It’s possible to use a small hand mirror for this, but the Mirror is even better. The mirror is specially designed to view your own vulva. Perfect for the job!

Aftercare

After shaving, it is important to properly moisturize the skin to prevent as much irritation as possible. You can hydrate your skin using aloe vera gel, sudocrem, or a cream or oil specially designed for after shave care such as fur

Still suffering from bumps? Then look for a cream that provides relief. We are fans of the Stubble Crème from Fur but there are certainly more beautiful products out there.

Myths and facts

To wrap everything up, here are some myths & facts about shaving:

Shaving makes your hair thicker

Myth! this is not true, you shave away the thinner hair ends. Therefore, the hair that grows back simply looks thicker and darker, because it’s a lower part of the hair strand. Shaving doesn’t make your hair thicker or darker.
