Why are my breasts uneven?

Are your breasts uneven in size? That is completely normal. Cycle explains how you can fix this ‘problem’ with a well-fitting bra.

The Cycle editors are often asked why breasts are uneven and if more people suffer from it. The answer is really quite simple: it happens more often than not. Breasts are actually never completely symmetrical and even. Oftentimes one breast is a little larger than the other. The same can be said about the nipples, there can be a difference between both sides.

Think about your face. You have one more ‘photogenic sideaa’ and one not so much. Your hands are not even either, nor are your legs and arms. To conclude, people just aren’t symmetrical!

It’s an anatomical development which is absolutely normal. But, what can you do if it bothers you?

Well, let’s start with the bad news. There is no way to train away the unevenness of your breasts.

However, the good news is that almost everyone who has breasts deals with it. So, you are not alone. And whilst you might see the unevenness between them, that doesn't mean that the ‘outside’ world sees and notices it as well.

Do you want some help anyway? When you try on a bra, choose one that perfectly fits the larger breast. This is the one that needs the most support. You can always put in a bra pad insert on the other side, which makes your breasts seem more even. You can also adjust the shoulder straps so your bra fits perfectly around your boobs.

In some cases the difference is much larger (we’re talking about a difference of several cup sizes) and this can cause a lot of pain. In this case, it’s best to discuss it with your GP. Perhaps surgery can be the solution to make your breasts more even. But please remember, they’ll never be completely even! Most of all, be proud of your boobs. They tell your story and are part of you! Embrace them.
