cry baby, cry: why you sometimes cry after sex

Cycle Care

After sex, you suddenly notice that you’re feeling gloomy, and you feel yourself beginning to tear up. How embarrassing, you might think. It’s really not that bad. It happens more often than you’d think.

After an orgasm, it might happen that you feel like crying or start to feel down. We call this phenomenon crymaxing. In the medical world, it’s also known as post-coital dysphoria (PCD).

Almost half of all women+ have experienced this before, and that isn’t a bad thing. There hasn’t been a lot of research on what causes it, but it’s suspected that it happens due to the release of various substances and hormones in your body. But, it can also happen if you haven’t had an orgasm. An after-sex slump can also occur because sex is an intimate thing that calls up lots of emotions. That can be an overwhelming thing of its own.

Does this happen to you a lot? Be sure to discuss it with your partner, so that they don’t get any hard feelings about it. If you do, your partner might be a rock to lean on! Cuddling up or hugging can make a world of difference.
