Watch: ‘Sex, Explained’

What do we like, who do we like, and why is that? If you daydream about sex, what does it look like? And why is childbirth so painful? The series ‘Sex, Explained’ will give the answer to these and many other questions. Cycle decided to watch it for you.

We often think that our fantasies are weird and unique to us. ‘Sex, Explained’ rids us of that dream within the first five minutes: we are pack animals and we basically all fantasize about the same topics. First place definitely goes to the threesome. Another faulty assumption is the thought that we would love for our fantasies to become reality. That’s not true at all, a fantasy is completely separate from who you really are. So those who regularly daydream about violent rape or some other dark fetish don’t need therapy. That’s a relief, right?

What isn’t such a ‘relief’ is the episode focused on birth control. The pill provides a constant influx of hormones that can give us headaches and hair growth in weird places, just to name a few random side effects. And why is there not a variant of the pill for men? The answer to that question is disconcerting: Manufacturers see little to no reason to modify their products, because we women will buy the pill anyway.

These and other facts fly around our ears, nicely packaged in fresh infographics and graced by experts who explain how chemical and psychological processes do their work in the human body. We also regularly get a piece of history in between. It provides an interesting picture of the times, a glimpse into our Western culture, and our fascination (obsession even?) with carnal lust.

‘sex, explained’ is so proper you can even watch it with your mom

The five episodes of twenty minutes deal successively with sexual fantasies, attraction, birth control, fertility, and childbirth. It’s fun and informative, but a little boring as well. ‘Sex, Explained’ is so proper you can even watch it with your mom. It will also do nicely at school, supplementing many a teacher’s dry sex education. Hot and dirty? Those are two things it won’t be. But we did learn something and ‘Sex, Explained’ is a wonderful crash course on the world of all things hot and dirty.
