Colposcopy
A colposcopy is a procedure that allows the gynecologist to closely examine the cervix for signs of disease using a modified microscope (colposcope). This exam is often performed after an abnormal Pap test result. During the exam, the gynecologist uses a speculum to open the vagina. The cervix is opened ten to twenty times the original size, making it easier to see any abnormal cells in the cervical mucus. Using the colposcope, the gynecologist then checks for the presence of any abnormal cells. The use of the speculum can be experienced as uncomfortable, but it’s not so bad that you need any form of anesthesia.
Are you dreading your vaginal exam? If you are, you can always discuss this with your doctor.
